Outdoor Sports Jackets

If you like to do outdoor activities then one of the things that you must surely own is an outdoor jacket. Not all jackets are the same though, and it is important that you choose the correct jacket for what you want to do. Hiking jacket for example wouldn’t be ideal for cycling in, just as a cycling jacket wouldn’t be ideal for hiking in. I’m not saying that you couldn’t wear a jacket not intended for the sport, but buying a jacket specific to your sport will greatly enhance you enjoyment of it.

Buying a jacket that has features relevant to your sport will make it last longer and the jacket be more comfortable. A hiking jacket would have reinforced shoulders to bear the weight of a heavy rucksack and would generally be made out of tough resistant material. A cycling jacket however would be made out of a lighter material with no reinforced areas simply because it doesn’t need any.

If you were cycling in a hiking jacket, it’s likely that you’d get hot very quickly or your lower back would end up getting exposed because it would ride up your back as you cycled. Cycling jackets have longer backs, longer arms and a generally made out of a lighter material that is inherently more breathable. The cut of a cycling jacket is very specific to the sport and as such will provide a comfortable experience on the bike.

In conclusion make sure that the jacket you are buying is suitable for what you want to use it for.

Can I Wear a Sports Jacket on a Formal Night Cruise? – Dress Codes Inside Major Cruise Lines

Can I wear a sports jacket on a formal night cruise? I’ve always been very stubborn when it comes to wearing a formal attire in any occasion and a cruise is no exception. It’s always been a tough job when it comes to packing for a cruise and you have to consider that most cruise lines today give a mix of formal, informal and casual wear.

What does “resort casual” really mean? Are there different levels of wearning a “formal” attire? Do you really have to pack an evening dress or a tuxedo on a cruise? Is there any parts of the ship where one can wear different attires?

Proper dining attire will be different for every ship. This will depend on the itinerary and the length of the trip. Typically a one week cruise will have 1-2 formal nights. And all cruise lines will brief the passengers on what to wear during the night.

Pay close attention — You don’t have any idea how the cruise industry works and you’re actually being taken advantage of. I’ll let you in a secret on how to outsmart them at the end of this article but first let’s take a look at the dress codes on some of the major cruise lines.

Carnival – It’s mandatory that you wear a formal attire in the dining room. A formal attire for men include a tuxedo, suit and tie, or a sports coat and slacks. Women can wear evening gowns and cocktail dresses. Resort casual attire are also appropriate. Shorts, t-shirts and swimsuits are not advisable to wear in the dining area at night. If you’re traveling with kids then the dress code is also same for them.

How about if you don’t want to dress up? You can always go to the Lido restaurants which are open every night except on the last evening of the cruise.

Princess – They have smart casual nights and you can wear whatever it is you’re wearing when you go to a fine dining restaurant. You cannot wear jeans and you must have your shoes on all the time.

Holland America – You can wear comfortable and loose clothing when it comes to their casual evenings. Men can wear their jackets and their ties if they want to. As always pantsuits and dresses are good for women. You can also wear jackets and ties during their formal evenings.

Celebrity – It’s almost always the same drill when it comes to their formal wear. Men can wear a jacket, tie and slacks. Women can wear a sporty attire and pantsuits. If you’re going on a specialy restaurant, they require men to wear jackets with ties and blouses or pants would be fine for women.

Cruise lines are very good at persuading you to spend more money than you’ll ever need. That’s how they’re profiting. Everything inside a cruise ship is designed to get you to spend more money. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Sport Jacket Fit

A well-fitted sport jacket can make you look polished and masculine. However, one that is too small or too large can create a messy look. For normal everyday wear, weddings, interviews, and special occasions, the right fit on your jacket or sport coat is absolutely key.

How do you know if a sport jacket has the right fit for you? Here are a few key things to look for:

1. Cuff length- When you are standing and relaxing with your arms at your sides, the jacket sleeve cuff should not hit the back of your hand, nor should it hit your palm. If it does, this simply means the sleeves are too long. Typically, this is something you can get tailored fairly easily (and for not much cost). The cuff of your sport jacket should reach about of an inch above the top of your hand. This way, you can wear a dress shirt underneath it without the two different cuffs getting all bunched up together. The shirt cuff is meant to show just teeny bit; about to of an inch below the cuff of your sport jacket.

2. Chest fit- To determine the size of your chest, use a soft measuring tape and wrap it around the fullest part of your chest, which is just below your arm pits. Hold one end of the measuring tape in front of you, then wrap the other end behind your back and around to meet the first end on your chest. This way, you will have to expand your shoulder blades slightly, which is accurate in terms of how you want a sport jacket to allow you some movement. This measurement is your jacket size, and therefore gives you a good starting point when you go to try on blazers and sport coats. A proper chest fit and a straight, clean tie knotare two details that are integral to a polished look.

3. Length- If you are 5′ 7″ or shorter, you will need a short jacket length. If you are between 5′ 8″ and 6 feet tall, you will need a regular jacket length. If you’re over 6 feet, you’ll need a long, and over 6′ 3″ you’ll need an extra long. The reason length is important is because it determines how the jacket drapes, and therefore contributes greatly to the overall look and style. If you are right between lengths and not sure which one to go for, select the one that is slightly longer then get it tailored up.

4. Vent fit- A vent in a blazer, sport jacket, or suit coat is designed to help the jacket fit well when you are sitting down. Some European made, particularly Italian, jackets do not have a vent. This is a nice style that you can go for if you would like. However, you should be aware that your jacket is much more likely to get crumpled and rumpled when you sit down if it does not have a vent. If you do get a sport jacket with a vent, look for a center vent that is not frayed, pulled apart, or stretched in any way. The vent should lay smoothly and look fairly flat. If the vent splays out or pulls when you walk, then the jacket is too big for you.
